Square Foot Gardening!

So, in order to offset our increasing grocery bill (due to eating a lot more fruits and veggies lately), we got the bright idea to implement a garden in our backyard. But not just any garden.....a Square Foot Garden. And not just ONE garden....but 5! Apparently we don't do anything small. Jase was a trooper and gathered the materials, built the raised gardens, and re-routed the drip lines. I was proud of myself for helping via driving the car home with the materials inside and I even did the drip lines on a box or two :) We have yet (as of this writing) filled the boxes with any soil or seeds. Jase will be picking up the "Mel's Mix", a.k.a. "dirt", this Tuesday with the help of his very generous brother, Shane, and his truck and trailer. We'd been calling around everywhere in Phoenix looking for vermiculite, a crucial 1/3 of the mix. We finally found a nursery, A&P, that carried it---of course, they're on the east side! So, once we haul the dirt home, mix it and fill the gardens we'll probably be so tired that we'll have to put off planting the seeds for another week or two. By then it may be 110 degrees here and nothing will grow anyway! joking, of course--I hope. But we'll keep moving forward and someday we'll be real gardeners!
